Mary's Instructions:Mary appeared standing on a globe, with rays of grace streaming from her hands, and requested that a medal be made from this image. The Inscription:Around the image of Mary were the words, "O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee". The Promise:Mary promised that those who wore the medal around their neck would receive great graces. 

The Design of the Medal The Front:Features Mary on a globe, crushing a serpent under her feet, symbolizing her triumph over evil and her role as Queen of Heaven and Earth. The Rays:The light from Mary's hands symbolizes the graces she bestows, with some rays not falling from certain gems to represent graces for which souls forget to ask. 

The Back:A cross with a bar at its base, representing the cross and the Earth, is surmounted by the letter "M" for Mary. The Hearts:Below the "M" are the Sacred Heart of Jesus, crowned with thorns, and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, pierced with a sword, representing their love and sacrifice. 

The Stars:The entire image on the reverse is surrounded by twelve stars, possibly representing the twelve apostles or the woman described in the Book of Revelation. How the Medal Became "Miraculous"Cholera Epidemic: In 1832, a severe cholera epidemic devastated Paris. Distribution: The Sisters of Charity distributed the first Miraculous Medals to help. 

Healings and Conversions: The number of healings and conversions among those who wore the medal increased dramatically. 

A Source of Graces: The medal was named "Miraculous" because of the abundant graces and miracles it seemed to provide, leading to its widespread adoption and devotion.
